It is a very competitive market out there, no matter what your industry. Whether you are selling apples or smartphones, there are more competitors than ever, and only the strongest will survive. And there is a lot that goes into survival. You need a solid business plan, of course, and that will include a creative marketing plan and resourceful social media plan, just to name a few elements. You will have to stay up late crunching numbers and churning out ideas. You will need a talented, collaborative, supportive team. And you will need a logo. A logo is an important part of your business because it is often the fastest way your potential customers identify and recognize you. Below are five ways to make your logo more attractive to potential customers.
TIP #1 Know your audience.
As with any part of your business, when you are designing your logo you need to think about your audience. Whose attention are you trying to catch? What appeals to one group of people may not to appeal to another group. Research who your audience is and what they like. Make sure your logo design corresponds with the group's preferences. For example, you may want to avoid putting a sparkle effect on a logo for a tough audience.
TIP #2 Look for inspiration.
The best logos are often the most unique but that does not mean that they are ideas that sprang into someone's mind from nowhere. Everything comes from something, so go out looking for inspiration. Need a logo for your flower shop? Spend some time at the botanical gardens. Need a logo for your veterinary hospital? Take your dog on a hike and spend some time bonding with him. You never know where inspiration will find you!
TIP #3 Keep it simple.
Okay, so now you know your audience and you have been inspired and you have an idea. You start to sketch it out. Maybe it involves several ideas. Maybe it is a real work of art. But maybe it is also too complicated. The best logos have a basic simplicity to them that makes the message they are sending clear. Stay focused on the goal of the logo. What are you trying to say about your company? Pick one thing and say that well.
TIP #4 Use only three colors or less.
With very rare exceptions, the best logos do not use more than three colors. This goes back to simplicity, but has other reasons behind it too. Logos should be instantly recognizable, clear, and look good no matter what they are printed on. They should also work well in color and in grayscale, and using a big pallet will make that tough. So stick to three colors or less if you want to keep your customers attention.
TIP #5 Get feedback.
Now that you have designed a simple, thoughtful, well-designed logo with a clear message, it is time to get some feedback from everyone you can. Ask your friends and family for their input, and if you have customers in the store, feel free to ask for theirs as well. Listen to the feedback but do not feel obligated to follow everyone's advice. Don't forget to trust your own instincts!
